Safeguarding Your Tools. Some grim statistics
20 December 2023

Whatever trade you’re in, chances are you know someone who has had their tools stolen, or it may have happened to you. The Federation of Master Builders reports that eight in ten builders have been victims of theft at some point in their careers. They suggest that tool theft, on average, leads to the loss of £10,000 worth of tools and six working days.

And tool theft shows no sign of slowing down. In 2020, a staggering £17.5 million worth of tools were stolen in London alone, amounting to around £57,000 every single day. Here’s a statistic that might make your heart sink: only 1% of these tools are ever recovered.

The grim statistics:

Metropolitan Police data suggests that only 1% of stolen tools are ever returned to their rightful owner. It’s a fair assumption that if your tools are stolen, you’re unlikely to see them again. Over the last two years, tools worth more than £38 million have been taken.
